Share Dainty Button Giveaway

This will be short and sweet : )

A couple weeks ago, I decided to switch Dainty Button's personal profile to a business fan page. Details in this blog post http://daintybutton.blogspot.com/2011/02/fan-page-transition.html So far, so good. Although, going from over 2,000 "friends" on the personal page to not even 400 on the fan page is well, a transition, I guess I should say : )

I, personally, don't think that all of the "friends" on the personal page are aware of the new "fan page", may not have had a chance yet to switch over, or just don't want to. That's where I need all of you wonderful Dainty Button lovers help. I need you to share Dainty Button with everyone you know. It's very simple. You don't have to post a picture or comment on several different posts. Here's the details...

1. Each day, beginning today until Friday at 10 AM (PST), I will post the link to Dainty Button's "fan page". Once you see this link, share with as many people as you can, come back and comment under the post.
2. Only one comment per day.
3. That's it.

Please note, that everyday you share, your chances in the drawing increase, versus picking a day or two. I will announce the winner Friday afternoon.

So, what's the giveaway?

Spring Carnival Carrie

Dainty Button's newest Spring addition. This is absolutely one of my favorite pieces in my shop. Handmade with beautiful European wool felt. You will have the option of a skinny or wide stretch band.

Have fun, enjoy and SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!

Catching Up With Dainty Button

Hello, hello! How is everyone? It seems like it's been a bit since I've blogged. Lots to tell you about : ) I'll try not to overwhelm, annoy or bore you with the details. I believe the last blog I left you with was our shipping turnaround transition. Wow! I cannot begin to tell you how much this has changed my life. Literally. It feels so great getting shipments out quickly, without the pressure of it weighing on you. And if you're reading this as a recipient of last week's new shipping transition launch, I hope you enjoyed getting it a bit sooner : ) I managed to leave the studio by 5 pM every evening last week. 5! This may not seem a big deal to some, but considering it was a normal occurrence to not leave before 7, even 8, at times, it was a miracle, I tell ya! I even had Saturday off! I was bored, but I'm sure very many of these free non-business days, I'll find something to do. Like, sleep? Ha! Needless, to say the shipping turnaround is a god send! Until the past few days. It's not the end of the world, but when customers start asking how to "plump" the petals up on the "It's a Wrap" Collection, if they can iron the leaves out on the headbands, etc. after receiving them in the mail, it made me start wondering why it's doing that. Well, the postal service, of course. And I was immediately taken back to a time when I first started Dainty Button and I used boxes to ship purchases in. This was good and  bad. The good part was they were really cute and very sturdy. The bad part was they're ridiculous to ship. For returning customers, some were running out of space with the boxes because they felt bad about throwing them away. It also had to do with the fact that they were not very cheap, either. Hence, the reason I began shipping in muslin bags. Well, those are very lightweight, easy to package and alot smaller. The bad thing about this is what I'm currently realizing. The items are being smashed. Some of Dainty Button pieces, such as the shoe clips, pendants, etc. are not as big of a deal. But the rest is. I don't blame customers. I wouldn't want a smashed headband when I first received it either. Of course, this can usually be fixed by plumping it back up, but it still bugs me. So, I did some serious searching all night last evening, chomping numbers, measuring boxes, the whole works. I found a great resource on shipping. In cute lil' boxes. From what I can see, there's good all around. They're very lightweight, compact, easy to package orders in, gift giving ready for those that purchase as gifts and loved the muslin bags and they are also going to save me money and time! Using boxes cuts out sewing bags, handstamping bags (as cute as they are) and it allows your purchases to arrive in a better condition. Although...I cannot control the postal service. What they do with your package after it's shipped is out of my control. But, I am taking precautions to help it arrive in a much better condition. So, what to do with the bulk order of bubble envelopes and muslin I have? Ha! Until they are gone, shoe clips, pendants and items that will not be smashed will be shipped the same way. All other items, such as the "It's a Wrap" Collection, Headbands, etc. will be shipped with our new boxes. This will be another transition, so please be patient with us and we'll hopefully get this lil' problem ironed out. Here's a lil' idea on what to expect.

Given, the boxes will not hold candles but Dainty Button : )  The great part is. Yes, they'll be packaged nice and pretty but they're a type of box that you won't feel bad throwing away. And we won't hate you for it, either. So, cheers to new shipping boxes!

Dainty Button headbands are designed with wool felt. This is something I don't keep a secret. I have used a particular kind of wool felt since the beginning of my lil' business and it just hasn't met my personal standards. Yes, it's nice, but I have always looked for "better". So, a few weeks ago I came into contact with a supplier with wool felt in Europe. There were a few reasons why I was a little leery about ordering a bulk. One, it was a bit more expensive than I have spent. Two, it's from Europe and I was thinking of the turnaround with shipping. I ended up ordering some samples and when it arrived (a bit quicker than I had thought), I was in awe. I wanted to order bulk in every color available (over 90 colors). It was beautiful! So, what's so amazing about this wool felt? Well, here's a lil' info that might be interesting to you. At least, it was to me when I researched it out and spoke personally to the supplier.

The wool felt that we have used in the past is only 10 to 30% wool (not all) and harsh chemicals are used during the manufacturing process. That's great to know, right? Ha!

The wool felt we are transitioning to is considered the "cashmere" of wool felt, made with the finest sheep's fiber. It IS NOT overly process or treated with harsh chemicals. The new wool felt that we are using meets/exceeds British Safety Standards for children's items. The British Safety Standards have been around longer than any safety standards here in the USA, and are also more strict.

I can speak firsthand, this is the softest wool felt I have ever seen or felt. And the colors, WOW! Here's some new Dainty Button pieces that have already been used with the new wool felt.

A lil' side note on this particular piece and listing. These are felt flower pendants that were some of Dainty Button's first designs. They are fabulous! I wear them all the time. They're so much fun and versatile. They come in a set of 5 and can be worn separately, together and arranged however you'd like. A favorite of mine, especially in all these darling spring colors.

This headband has a couple different options, such as a wide stretch headband, can be made with a white band and/or also as a clip/pendant combo.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/68616895/madeline?ref=v1_other_1

The colors are amazing and I'm hoping by the end of March, to offer over 90 colors. Let's cross our fingers and hope!

Shoe Clips. Such a fun accessory, aren't they? Well, they just got better. I have recently switched to different shoe clips. The actual clip, not design. The clips are even flatter and more sturdy. What's great about the new one's is if the latch comes undone, you can just pop it back on. Yay! Excited about this lil' change.

You can find a selection of my shoe clips in my etsy shop, which are all offered with the new shoe clip.

I recently did a lil' poll on our facebook wall, asking what some of you Dainty Button lovers would like to see from us in the future. I got alot of great feedback and some wonderful ideas. The main one was a different kind of band and the option of a smaller design. I'm not sure if you've noticed in the Spring Line, but I have offered a few more smaller pieces. I also, recently introduced the thin band headband. A very thin stretch headband with a Dainty Button design. Here's a peek.

I'm working on offering a thin band on the majority of Dainty Button headbands. Be looking for this in the very near future : )

Charge it! Dainty Button now accepts credit cards. Yes, yes, yes! This is something I have been working on forever. And now, we offer it! Etsy is still the main way to purchase, but I do accept payments over the phone, via email/invoice with a credit card now.

This brings me to the end of this blog but I saved the best for last.

Shipping Rescue

Shipping. The most annoying part of owning an online retail business, hands down. I love when customers keep in contact with me and they're happy with their packages and the prompt delivery. Unfortunately, I have been on the receiving end of "not so happy" customers because their order has been late. This is not done intentional. I can assure you that. Without boring you with the details, handmade items are much different than ordering something online from say, Target or Anthropologie. I don't have an army of workers, slaving away at making headbands. I have wished many times, I did. I have two full-time assistants and during extremely busy times, such as the holidays, I have a couple extra hands when needed. The bad thing about this is I am the only one that is skilled in making the accessories. I have trained my assistants with the "prep" process of creating Dainty Button accessories, but when it comes down to actually finishing it, it's all up to me. That's why it's very important to have as much of the "prep" process completed before I step in. A few facts about Dainty Button accessories. When we say "handmade for you", we mean it. Dainty Button accessories, except the the Shoe Collection, is made from scratch. There is no embellishing anything.

Facts:

1. All headbands and wraps are sewn from scratch.
2. All leaves are handcut by the Dainty Button team.
3. All flowers, including the petals on the "It's a Wrap" Collection are handcut by the Dainty Button team.
4. Dainty Button muslin packaging bags are measured, cut, sewn and hand stamped by the Dainty Button team.

Now, you might understand that it's not very easy to get orders out very quickly, especially when there is an average of 20-30 orders a week. Not headbands, but orders. Some orders have consisted of up to 25 pieces. This is etsy orders, only. We also have an average of 1-4 conferences, trunk shows and craft fairs quarterly. I say all of this to try and explain the process of a custom handmade business.

So, for the past 6 to 7 months, I have been brainstorming and racking my brain as to how I can create a quick and easy creating and shipping process. A few months ago, one of my assistants was thinking out loud, as I was pulling out my hair and about to throw my sewing machine out the window. She suggested pre-making everything. Well, her and about a dozen others had suggested this. Yes, this would be such a great help, but when would we actually have time to sit down and pre-make each design? My etsy shop carries an average of 90-105 pieces in inventory. Sure, that was a great idea. That would be just swell. Again, WHEN would we have the time? Well, business became even crazier during the holiday season and I almost had 10 nervous breakdowns within 6 months. My family finally called an intervention. My dad sat down with me about a month ago and told me I needed to make a change or close up shop. Well, I'm a 27 year old woman that could've easily said, "this is my business and I'll do it my way", but I'm not stupid. I know that my dad has many years experience and wisdom to see when someone, especially his own daughter, was headed for trouble. So, I hit my knees. Some may think this is crazy, but I have ALWAYS prayed about every issue in my life, including purchasing cars, jobs, etc., and I really needed some direction. And I believe with my whole heart that the past month, has been orchestrated by God. Thanks to a wonderful team of assistants, friends and family, I was able to get my studio organized, throw a successful grand opening and get orders under control.

NOW, we could pre-make inventory. My initial idea was to pre-make everything and have 3-5 already made pieces of each design in stock. Well, yeah, that would be great but I was also thinking of where would I put that many accessories, without squashing them. I don't like sending out squashed items and I'm sure, you as a customer, would not want to receive a squashed headband. So, we had a creative brainstorming meeting and created a great process. I hired a "shipping/receiving and packaging" team member who now controls all orders and comes in on certain days to package and ship, as well as take care of all packaging supplies. My other two assistants have been put in charge of prepping all designs. Handcutting flowers, leaves, etc. I, for the time being, am controlling the sewing process of all accessories. We closed down shop over the weekend, as well as mainstreamed and maintained incoming orders last week and knocked it all out. We now have successfully accomplished the "prep" process for over 100 Dainty Button pieces, allowing us to have 3-5 in stock of each. This leads us to our new shipping turnaround of 3-5 business days, versus our older shipping turnaround of 7-10 business days. Big change! Good change!

I feel like I have accomplished so much! I have accomplished so much! This has cut down on our time at least 50, if not 60%. Here are a few things to understand about the new shipping turnaround.

We only ship on Thursday's and Friday's. This has turned out perfectly because our new shipping turnaround policy began today, which sets the schedule for our weekly outgoing shipment schedule. If you place orders between Friday and Tuesday, your order will go out that Thursday or following Friday (3-5 business days). Example:

Order: Friday, February 11th through Tuesday, February 15th
Outgoing: Thursday, February 18th or Friday, February 18th
(This is only an example. The new shipping policy did not start until February 14th.)

If you place your order on a Wednesday or Thursday, it will go out the following Thursday (again, 3-5 business days). Example:

Order: Wednesday, February 16th through Thursday, February 17th
Outgoing: Thursday, February 24th or Friday, February 25th.

Hopefully, this makes sense. Please note that if it says "Item is on backorder" when you purchase in my etsy shop, that means items will take 7-10 business days after purchase. My next goal is to get it out quicker and once I'm able to find the proper storage space, all accessories will be pre-made up to completion and ship out within 24-48 hours. BUT, that is something that will, like everything else, be a work in progress. I'm just happy to have accomplished this! : )

And last, but definitely not least...

The Spring Swag Bag Giveaway winner!

Another big transition that we are still working on is our official Dainty Button fan page. Trying to get over 2,000 "friends" from the old profile to switch over to the fan page has been interesting, but we're slowly transitioning well. I created a fun giveaway that would hopefully, help motivate others to make the switch. The details on what the fabulous Spring Swag Bag giveaway includes, can be found here...

I'd rather not use the word "bribe" : ) Determining the winner was quite a tricky task. I had to go back through a week's worth of comments on the fan page and blog. But, a winner has been chosen!

A HUGE congrats to...

April Hamilton!

Might, I add a HUGE "thank you" to everybody that participated and took the time out to share Dainty Button with so many of your friends. I mean every word when I say that Dainty Button wouldn't be the success it is, without all of you wonderful ladies. Thank you so, so, so very much! I really appreciate your support!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

The Fan Page Transition

And again, I find something to make my life just a bit busier. It's a cycle that never ends. Would you actually believe it if I told you, I'm working on adding SIMPLICITY to my life? I really am! Where shall I begin?

After a whirlwind year of an accidental business and a successful grand opening, I find myself evaluating certain things in my business, and even my personal life (they really bleed into each other), I am finding ways to simplify things. Problemo numbero uno. Problem number one, for those that don't speak spanish. I don't speak spanish either. I just happen to know a few words. I made a major "oops" last year when I began my business. Because it began as a hobby, I really didn't take much effort into keeping track of expense, time, labor, etc. I just created things and they sold. Well, when I finally realized that "Hey, this is actually a business.", I was quite in over my head and just started keeping records, receipts, etc. I basically gave it all to my accountant and let her work her magic. It appears the problem was taken care of. Wrong. When I sat down with my banker a couple weeks ago, he asked me questions about net profit, revenue, blah, blah, blah. Hmmm? Help! Where's my accountant? What's he saying? I was so confused. And upset. I actually have a good point and exciting news to this blog. I'm just taking the scenic route : ) Anyways...I was upset. I hate feeling like a failure. Not that people actually mind feeling that way. But, there's a sense of irritation when it's your own business and you don't even know all the loops, especially when it comes to the finances. So, as always, I became very stubborn and persistent on fixing the problem. I spoke with my accountant and she *gasp* gave me homework. She "suggested" (it was more of a "you'll have to do this" sort of suggestion) that I sit down and take inventory of everything I have put work into. Are you kidding me? Seriously? She wasn't kidding. And she was dead serious. So, guess what I have been doing the last week? Running figures on every single item that's in my inventory. I'd like to say I enjoyed this challenge, but my parent's taught me not to lie.

Isn't it amazing how it takes so much work to actually make things in life simpler? It took me a week to finish this little challenge, but guess what? My business will run smoother and simpler. Funny how that works. So, now "Mr. Banker" will have met his match at our next meeting. Hmph!

Simplicity City task #2: My shipping. Many customers, especially those new to etsy, don't understand the shipping policy, so to speak. I've had numerous customers place an order and within 24 hours, email me asking if it had been shipped yet. That would be great, except I actually hand make EVERY single design and well, I am only one person. Yes, I have a great team that works with me, but we are also human and as much as it would be great, I don't have a factory full of people making headbands. When I began Dainty Button, I was good at getting items out within a few days. When things began to quickly pick up, I had to extend the turnaround. I was so worried that I would lose clientele if my shipping turnaround was too long. I researched this out and was surprised to find out that it was the norm for "handmade by me for you" items to have a turnaround of anywhere from 7 to 14 days. Hmmm. Well, this has worked for me. It's HAD to work for me. There has been no easier or quicker way. I have been so swamped and not been able to get it out sooner. Well, it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel where my shipping turnaround is concerned. See, now that I have this whole "inventory" thing under my belt, my grand opening complete, everything all nice and organized, etc., I can actually do as so many people have suggested and create a "stock" of Dainty Button, so to speak. Trust me, it's alot easier said than done. Now, it can be DONE! That is the reason come Monday, I will be closing my etsy shop for a week. I hate doing this. Especially, since I just closed it down two weeks ago for a week and well, when this is your livelihood, it's kind of important to actually make money. But, yet another challenge that will make things so much more simpler. I think I can suck this one up. So, please keep my team and I in your prayers and well wishes as we create Dainty Button's "stock" this next week. I promise, this will make it so worth it, for you and us. Quicker delivery!

Ok. Now to what I'm actually blogging about. This all boils down to SIMPLICITY, so the first part kinda counts. Another "oops" at the beginning of my business. See, running your own business is not always peachy keen. I should have created a "fan page" on facebook when Dainty Button was birthed. Yes, this blog is about facebook. I created a "friends" page. This hasn't really been too much of a problem, except when people post those silly "farmville" requests, among other very annoying things. I also have to accept every friend request. I'm not complaining at all, by no means. I'm happy for every friend, fan, customer, etc. on Dainty Button's facebook page, but at times, especially when I'm really busy, it can be a little time consuming. I also have seen some great marketing tools if you have a "fan page". So, after alot of "should I?"'s, I have decided to make the switch. And another challenging task that in the end will make things SIMPLER.

The challenge? Getting over 2,000 "friends" to switch over, including all of my photo albums and what not. Jealous? Well, I have brainstormed a motivational way of hopefully getting the majority of my "friends list" to make the switch. What better way than a contest and giveaway?

It's going to be fairly easy. I think. See, I've already created a "fan page". BUT. The contest doesn't begin until Monday. Sorry. On Monday, or anytime after Monday, once you switch over from the Dainty Button "friends" page to the "fan page", all you have to do is post "I crossed over". Once you post this easy little quote, you'll be entered to win a Dainty Button Spring Swag Bag. A little bit of a tongue twister, huh?

The Details/Rules:

1. The contest will begin Monday, February 7th at 10 AM (PST). I will "suggest" Dainty Button's "fan page" from the original Dainty Button "friends page". The original will phase out by Friday.
2. You will have until Friday, February 11th at 11:59 (PST) to switch over, "like", become a fan and comment.
3. Want to double your chance at winning? There's a chance for that too. If you suggest Dainty Button's new "fan page" each day after you become a "fan", yourself, comment on the new "fan page" that you "shared", it will increase your chance at winning.
4. Want to triple your chance at winning? There's a chance for that too. Complete steps 1 and 2, and then head over to this blog post and comment that you "liked" and "shared". This can be a "on time" deal or daily. It all depends on how bad you want to win.

So, what's the Spring Swag Bag?

Here's a little peak...

All 6 little pretties are included in the Spring Swag Bag.

The fun begins Monday at 10 AM (PST). Don't miss out and make the switch!

Love, Dainty Button

Valentine's Day. I have mixed emotions about this holiday. I like the thought behind the actual holiday. Love. I like all of the cute decorations, the hearts, the colors (especially pink),  the flowers, blah, blah, blah. But, unfortunately for those that do not have a "significant other", they kind of get cheated on this holiday. Many people have singled out this holiday being for "lovers" and "couples". Love is not just about a man and a woman, as I'm sure we all know that. But, for some reason that's what Valentine's Day has become. If you're not in a relationship, you're just outta luck. Well, that's what people have made it, at least. In grade school, they get those cute little cards from classmates and occasionally, random people will get thoughtful "just because I love you" gifts. Well,  growing up, I always got a Valentine's Day gift. No, not from a "boyfriend". To be honest, out of my entire dating history, I have only had a boyfriend on two different Valentine's Day and he forgot both. Needless, to say, there is a reason why we are not together anymore. That, along with 146 other reasons. Ok, back to the subject.

My mom always gave us a gift. It's still a tradition. She always taught us that Valentine's Day is not about a "boyfriend" or "girlfriend", but about "love". It's about showing those you love that you love them. It's a little sad that people have singled this out for only the "couples".  So, what are you doing for Valentines Day? Any special plans? Buying anybody a gift or doing something special for someone that's not your "significant other"?

Well, Dainty Button has plans for Valentine's Day. Yep, we're showing our love and affection to those that we care about. Our customers. So, on the special "day of love", we're offering 10% off your purchase from 10 am to 5 pm (pst). It's our Valentine's Day gift to you. Type in the code "love10" to receive your savings at check-out.

And in the meantime, we have alot of gifts under $20 that you still have time to purchase for that special friend, significant other or yourself in our etsy shop.

Love: A strong affection for someone or thing.

How are you showing others you love?

It's a Wrap

The Wrap. Everyone likes it, but has no idea what to do with it. So, here it is. An entire blog dedicated to this accessory piece.

I created this accessory piece last year, a few months into the beginning of Dainty Button. My inspiration was a scene out of "The Notebook". I love retro, circa 1940's-50's accessories. My mind went to work and I came up with what I call the "It's a Wrap" Collection. The first few I made were pretty raw, but surprisingly customers were actually buying them. I later perfected this accessory piece, with a sewing machine and they began selling like crazy. So many ladies love them, think they're pretty at a glance but aren't brave enough to wear them. Why? Well, for one, many don't know HOW to wear them. This accessory is probably the most versatile accessory I've seen to date. It serves many purposes and can be worn so many different ways. I hope by the end of this blog, it'll give you a boost of confidence.

Fun fact about the "It's a Wrap":

It can be worn as a hair accessory or...

Yes, a belt. They're cute with a lil' tee during the spring/summer or on a dress for church, a wedding or just out and about. They pizazz up your outfit and what's even better? The jersey knit that each "It's a Wrap" is handmade in, is super comfy. It won't cut your circulation off, like so many other belts. Trendy and comfy. What's better than that?

As a hair accessory, the "It's a Wrap" has endless possibilities.

The style, I like to call, "The Hippie". This particular style is fun and geared more for the younger crowd. Of course, not exclusive to "the younger crowd" : )

Another "hair down" style that might be geared more for the "play it safe" woman...

Hair down, the "It's a Wrap" behind the ears is a trendy and sophisticated way to wear this accessory.

Additional tip: The "It's a Wrap" also looks good with a side braid (not pictured).

Hair up, this accessory piece can be worn may different ways.

A simple twist in the back is a great way to wear the "It's a Wrap". This hairstyle that tends to be more on the "simple" side, can be spiced up with a fun wrap.

The "ponytail". Oh, how I love the "ponytail". A hairstyle I find myself in on most days. This hairstyle is adorable with the "It's a Wrap". A high or low ponytail looks great with this accessory piece.

Ok, I'll admit. I have "bedhead" most days. My family and friends have come to accept it. It possibly could be the fact that I live in San Francisco and the style here is more laidback or it could be I just like to wear my hair a little "messy". So, when you see this style, don't be alarmed. Piled up on your head can be a "neat" pile or more like mine..."messy" : ) Either way, the "It's a Wrap" looks just darling with your hair up.

Like, I said, the "It's a Wrap" Collection is quite versatile. It's Dainty Button's most popular piece and trust me, once you buy one, you'll want one in every style. Try it. They won't bite.

Dainty Button's etsy shop has over 20 styles in the "It's a Wrap" Collection. A couple tidbits about the "It's a Wrap".

1. Washable - Handwash in cold water, hang dry
2. Petals dying? Blow dry on low to "resurrect" the blossom.
3. Wrinkled? Iron on low heat to get the wrinkles out of the jersey knit.
4. Comfy, comfy, comfy!

Dainty Button "It's a Wrap" are also available for newborns, infants and children...

You know you want one!
