This is how it's gonna go down...

This blog entry will be somewhat quick and to the point. I'm quickly trying to tie up any loose ends, today with orders, back ordered orders, now that we got our bands in (FINALLY!) and organizing a bit. I like to be prepared and knowing that next Tuesday I face a full semester of 15 units, attending school every day, makes me very nervous about everything being in order. If you've been following my blog and FB fan page, you'll know that I'm going back to school next week and finishing out my degree, this year. I've had many people ask me how I'm going to juggle school and my business, without killing myself. Well, I'm going part time. VERY part time. I sat down and looked at my school schedule, what I can realistically do out of each day with Dainty Button, while factoring in study/homework time and other obligations and responsibilities on my plate. The truth of the matter is, I can only commit to about 6 hours a week. This is a little hard to process, considering I'm used to working 40+ hours a week with Dainty Button. If I'm physically (and mentally) able to take on more, during the week, I will.

So, how exactly will this work?

I will be managing orders daily to see what comes in. Once I reach that limit a week, I will then either temporarily close my shop until I complete those orders or move my shipment turnaround time. I will more than likely rely upon the first option. Out of experience, it's better to get caught up before taking on more work. I hope this will not scare any customers off, in fear that you may be waiting forever to get your purchases. I'm preventing long delays by regulating orders and being realistic about how much work I can take on a week. Once, I get into the groove of school and solidify a schedule that works for me, this could change. I'm just being upfront and honest with my customers.

I am unlisting items this weekend that I will not longer offer, so if you've had your eye on something in particular, I wouldn't hesitate to check if it'll be around for awhile.

The Scoop

This is not goodbye. I have had many customers email me, asking if I'm closing my business. The answer is "NO!". If you happened to read my latest post, you'll know that I have decided to finish my degree, this year and will be taking Dainty Button part time. Very part time, in fact. I'm taking on a full semester and must focus my attention upon that. I do however, still have to make a living and enjoy working with all of you wonderful customers. You will still see me often on FB and such, but as mentioned before, it will be limited. I have devoted a certain amount of hours a week to Dainty Button. This is my last free week and I'm busy tying up loose ends and making sure I'm ready to head back to school, stress free before the stress comes back. Ha! I am currently cleaning out my etsy shop, which means that a lot of the items you see will no longer be available after this week. I will only keep a limited inventory in my shop, to help regulate orders. I've decided to list all items that will no longer be available, here in this blog. If you see something you want, I wouldn't hesitate. It's "sayanora" after this week.

Here's what's going...

Our Sweet Tooth selection will no longer be available, except for local delivery and pickup. I will consider overnighting, upon special request, with enough notice. You can find this selection on our FB page, if interested.

Everything else in my shop, will remain indefinitely. I will be adding a few new things this week, as well. You can also find me at different conferences and conventions, throughout the year. I will be at Western District Ladies Conference in Sacramento next month, February 23-25.

TWO THOUSAND TWELVE

Hello, friends and Happy New Year! I can't believe another year has passed and a new one has begun. How did you ring in the new year? I found a lot of people didn't even make it to midnight. Ha! I barely made it. I hosted a "college and career" church party at my house, which was a lot of fun. But a lot of work and I'm now very tired. Glad I don't have plans until later today.

I will admit, I'm not very good at keeping up with this blog. I try. I really do. I'll get some inspiration and sit down to blog, then something or someone gets my attention and it's gone. I guess, you can say this might be a resolution for me. Maybe, I'll try and blog more. Even once a week, would be better. LOL! It seems appropriate, that I kick off the first day of the new year, blogging on here. And guess what? I do have something to say : ) When do I not have something to say?

I'm not sure if all of you following me have followed my business venture the past two years. It's been a roller coaster ride. A fun and scary one! A quick history. I started Dainty Button as a hobby in January of 2010. My intentions were Europe. That STILL hasn't happened. My little hobby became quite a hit and turned into an accidental business. It's been a huge blessing in my life, but at the same time, a nightmare. Let me explain.

I was an elementary school teacher. I gave up my teaching job to focus on my business, when I realized I could not do both and when your own business is consistently bringing in more income than the other job, it's time to make some changes. I prayed about it and sought God about this decision. It was definitely a leap of faith and I needed that assurance. I had my family's full support and so, I made that step of faith. I gave my notice at the end of the school year in Spring '10. Since then, life has been a blur. One big blur.

Have you ever owned your own business? Do you own your own business? If "yes" is in reply to either of those questions, you'll understand where I'm coming from, with this blog. Owning a business, whether it's from your own home or a huge corporation, is no joke. Seriously. The first year of my business, I lost so much sleep. I literally killed myself. For what? To be honest, I can't even tell you. Meeting deadlines, orders, etc. It was silly. It really was. I'll be honest, there is no job worth losing sleep over or risking your health over. God did not intend, for work to be that way. Towards the end of 2010, the holidays were approaching and I knew if I didn't get help, like my family and friends were encouraging, I would be welcoming 2011 in a pysch ward or hospital bed. I hired help. It was such a breath of fresh air. 2011 was a great year. I got my own studio, had a grand opening, business was booming, BUT....life was just as crazy. Even with the hired help and studio, I just couldn't get a handle on simplicity and balance. I still kept late hours, worked my butt off, for what? I've put off trips, plans with family and friends, because of work. Step #1 is admitting you have a problem. My problem is, I take on WAY too much. I have a problem saying "no". This is one of the reasons why life has been so crazy. I take on too much, think I'm capable of it all, when in reality, I'm only human and can only do so much. I heard someone say, once, "I'd rather be good at one thing than try and multi task several things, and fail.". This is very true and unfortunately, I can relate. So, guess what 2012 is bringing?

Simplicity and Balance

Before Dainty Button, I had time for many different things. Hobbies, relaxing, trips, vacations, etc. Did you know I was going to college? Yes, I was. I was attending college and life happened. I took on a full time job at a local Christian school, teaching, which is where I was when Dainty Button was brainstormed. As I started my own business, my family was a little bummed I wasn't using the extra time to finish school, which should've been attainable, since I made my own hours. Well, it didn't happen. I attempted to this past fall, by slowly taking on a handful of units, to get my toes in the water. That didn't happen, either. Somewhere, last fall when I was about to have a meltdown because of the pressures of business, meeting deadlines, etc., I decided, "I have to make some changes. Very soon.". I'm too young, for this. I can't live life, losing sleep, missing special times with family and friends, not enjoying life. One large priority in my life that has taken a backseat, is my involvement with my local church. I'm the Kids Ministry Pastor and unfortunately, I have not given that area in my life as much focus as I need to. I love what I do. I love this business, but I'm human and I need to be enjoying life and taking care of other important priorities in my life. The other priorities in my life had taken a backseat, which was not ok. I sought God again, for direction, as my dad had wisely instructed me to and got some direction. December 3rd, I registered for classes. Last week, I paid tuition, fees and book rentals, which is ridiculously expensive! Seriously, they're robbing students. January 17th, I go back to school and December of this year, I will graduate with my degree in Journalism.

So, what does this mean for Dainty Button?

This means, that Dainty Button, most definitely still exists and IS NOT going anywhere, but will only be taking on so much, each month. Our inventory will be limited to a certain amount, each month, as well. Our Sweet Tooth section will ONLY be offered as an "overnight shipping" option and/or local. If you find our shop temporarily closed, this means that we're focusing on our current orders and will reopen as soon as we're caught up. This is not because business is not doing well. Absolutely not! It's a means of getting back to simplicity and balancing my life out, while keeping customers happy : ). As much as I want to make each and every customer happy, I'm only human. And if I'm struggling to keep each and every customer happy, while killing myself, something is going to fall between the cracks. I can only do so much. I hope that if you are a customer, you'll understand the decision I have made and wish me luck as I get back to a simpler way of life, and as a result, Dainty Button will prosper because of this decision.

Fall Fun

Hello....

Hello, Hello. I have finally gotten the chance to sort of revamp my blog. Eeek. It so, desperately needed it. It's been pitiful, really. There are many reasons why it ended up looking pitiful and to keep from boring you to tears, I will not indulge you. But, good news. My blog will now be more than just announcing a new collection, expansion, sale or giveaway. Yes, those are great and needed from time to time, but I want to give readers something more enjoyable to read. So, let's make this fun! So, with that being said. Here is to the best of my intentions. Wish me luck!

Help!!

I posted on my facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dainty-Button/187487127949802 about revamping our blog and asked for feedback and suggestions. I think maybe one person commented, but I did have a few email me. I've been asked many times to share DIY's with my blog and fan page followers, as well as customers. I won't be sharing any DIY's about my own personal work and recipes, but I will be posting some great ideas and such, that I'm a big fan of and hopefully, it will inspire others. As far as my own work, that's why I'm in business : )

Ok, on to my post. I'm blabbering...

What's your favorite season? I think out of all of my friends and family, fall is probably a favorite. I can't recall many telling me summer or winter. It's usually either, Fall or Spring. I think this is because the weather is so nice. It's either, right before or after you feel like you're in hell or going to freeze to death. I would have to say that Fall is my favorite. Summer is ok, but honestly, I live in San Francisco, and we don't really get a summer. We don't really get any seasons, for that matter. It's pretty much the same year round, give or take a couple months during winter that actually feel like we're having a "winter". But, "Fall" is still my favorite. I can always feel it in the air, starting around August. The energy of everybody's summer winding down and school starting back up. I get so excited. I'm a HUGE holiday person, so I think one excitement is knowing the holiday season is so close. So, as I write this post on the eve of Labor Day, I can't tell you how excited I am to just get tomorrow over with. I guess, it "officially" seems like fall once we bid Labor Day "goodbye".

The past week as been so hectic. Our family moved, which is by far, the worst experience. I hate moving with a deep passion. But, during this hectic week, my mind was going crazy with all sorts of new ideas. It's always during the most busiest, hectic times, when this happens. Not sure, why. In the midst of moving, finding a new home for my dog (horrible experience) and processing orders, it's a wonder, I'm this motivated. Ha! As I knew the Labor Day weekend was drawing close and it was technically the last summer "hoorah" for many, my anxiety for fall seemed to increase and the reality that the season was actually here, because even more exciting. I'm a huge entertainer and baker, during the holidays. Love it! I try to throw a Fall/Halloween party and Christmas party. Last year, I wasn't able to throw a Christmas one, because I was experiencing the first holiday season of retail. This year, I'm more prepared and a party is on the list! So, look for a lot of posts this season, with fun party and entertaining ideas, as well as baking tips and recipes. I'm sure there's a few of you out there, that enjoy it it, as much as I do.

First, I thought some of these ideas might be fun for my shop, Dainty Button, but after much thinking, I realized they just weren't a good fit. Mainly, shipping would be a pain in the rump. And I don't need to add any more work to my already busy schedule or any more "pains to my rump". But, they're such fun little ideas, I want to share! So, for those that have asked for fun little DIY's and tutorials, here you go! Maybe you can find some great use for them this season. I know, I will be trying them, myself.

Candy Apples

Don't these look amazing?? Another reason, I love fall! Candy and caramel apples. As soon, as I get settled in to our new home, I will most definitely be trying these guys out!

Recipe Ingredients

12 very small Red Delicious apples (from bagged apples)

1 cup each light corn syrup and hot water

1/2 cup red cinnamon candies (like Red Hots)

1/4 tsp liquid red food color

12 (8-in.-long) clean twigs, thin wooden dowels or candy sticks

2 cups sugar

Recipe Preparation
Line a large baking sheet with nonstick foil or parchment paper.
Wash and thoroughly dry apples; remove stems. Insert twigs firmly into stem ends.
Combine sugar, corn syrup and water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat; stir until sugar dissolves. Attach a candy thermometer to side of pan. Continue to cook, without stirring, until mixture reaches 250°F (wipe down sides of pan with a wet pastry brush occasionally to prevent crystallization).
When mixture reaches 250°F, add cinnamon candies and stir just to blend. Continue to cook until 300°F, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove syrup from heat and swirl in food color, tilting saucepan, until blended. Let mixture settle for a minute until bubbles slow down.
Holding an apple by the twig and tilting pan, dip and swirl apple until coated. Lift apple and gently twirl over saucepan, letting excess drip back into pan. Place on prepared baking sheet, twig up. Repeat with remaining apples.
Allow apples to stand at room temperature until candy coating hardens, about 1 hour. Candy apples can be made up to 1 day ahead and stored at room temperature.

I'd love to know if you try these, and how they turn out. I'm thinking these would be a fun addition to our church's College and Career Fall Party.

Candy Corn Craze

These are great little party favor ideas! I did them last year, and it was a huge hit!

What you need:

1. Mason jars or jars of any assortment adds uniqueness and variety.

2. Candy Corn

3. Mixed nuts or one particular type

4. Ribbon, notions, buttons, string, name tags, etc.

Get to it!

1. Simply mix Candy Corn and mixed nuts into each jar. Shake well, to give it a good mixture. I alternated with Candy Corn and mixed nuts, while shaking (lightly), as I alternated. The mixture was even and perfect.

2. Add your own decoration on the jars. I added ribbon, buttons and little notes on the front for my guests.

This was super fun and thoughtful. A yummy gift to give your guests.

Fall Fashion Find

My other favorite thing about fall, besides the food and entertaining is, fashion. I absolutely adore fall fashion. I live in a city where I can get away with wearing more of it, year round, but during the fall, it's even more fun. Recently, leafing through different fashion magazines, a style stood out to me, that I was anxious to try.

Knee socks and stockings with booty shoes, open toed shoes, etc. I know, I know. There is a fine line between wearing knee socks and booty shoes or shoes of any type, for that matter, as stylish fall fashion and looking like a sleazy Catholic schoolgirl. With as much fashion expertise, as I have (however much that is worth), I recommend to wear it carefully. Ha!

So, the last couple weeks, thanks to SF's wonderful "fall weather", I've been able to test the waters, a little. Here's what I've come up with...

I'm always asked where I get my shoes. Well, a variety of places. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" but on the other end of that, I'm also a firm believer in "deals". I hate paying an arm and a leg for my wardrobe. I shop at Target, Forever 21, thrift shops, etc., and I'll hit up sales. I'll admit that Nordstrom is my favorite department store and I'm guilty of frequenting it, quite often. But again, you get what you pay for. I live in a city where thrift shops are incredible. I know, not all people have that privilege, but I think if you look at the right places and know what you're looking for, you can find some great deals. I said all this, to say that 80% of my shoes have either been on sale, stores such as TJ Maxx, Marshall's, etc., thrift shops or, ok, I'm contradicting what I said earlier, gulp...knock offs. If the shoe is fab, I'm going to buy it, even if it is a knock off. Sure, they may only last a couple months, but what a wonderful couple months, those will be. I just don't recommend doing this with your entire shoe closet, otherwise, you will stay broke, for having to replace them all the time.

Stockings...

Another one of my downfalls is, stockings. Love them! What's not to love, besides the lack of circulation part? Ok, that can be annoying. I stumbled into Forever 21 this weekend. And boy, I shouldn't have. There, at a huge table were tights and stockings of every color, style and print. All under $8! The mustard colored tights you see in the last picture, are one of my choices. Absolutely adorable and they're comfy. Sometimes, when you pay a cheap price for stockings, you get what you pay for. These are not the case. They're sturdy, enough control, but not cutting the circulation off. I'm thinking of purchasing a few extra for stocking stuffer ideas. Seriously, go check them out!!

And the last little fashion trend, I liked was light floral skirts with stockings. A couple that I've worn the last couple weeks...

Ok, so this picture is totally random, but you get a good idea of how I pulled off the knee socks and booty shoes look. I generally, would not have done this before, but for some reason, I love the look.

That's my little sister, who looks amazing for just giving birth a month ago!

Not really sure why I chose this title, but it seems like I'm always on the run and trying to catch up. Hmmm. Anyways : )

I haven't blogged in quite some time, due to many, many reasons. I can't believe summer is almost over and we're preparing for fall. Yikes! I honestly, couldn't be happier about this. Fall, winter and the holidays are my favorite seasons. So, I'm over here chanting "Come on fall! Come on fall! Come on fall!". Ok, I'm sure you get the drift.

How has everybody's summer been? It's gone by so quick, I'm not sure what all I did. Such a blur. So, let's catch up with Dainty Button!

SIDE NOTE:

If you've been following my blog and our facebook page, you might know that my sister was expecting this summer. Notice, I said "was" : ). She gave birth to the most precious little boy on Saturday, July 30th in San Francisco. Jude Truman Hogue. I thought for a minute I'd miss the birth, due to a trip, but God heard my prayers and I was able to experience the wonderful occasion. He joins my darling little niece, Zoe Belle. I'm quite the proud auntie.

Let's get back to business...

Christmas in July SALE

I will briefly discuss this topic, partly due to me being so exhausted from this sale and it's over. First of all, if you purchased something in our Christmas in July SALE, thank you! Also, thank you for your patience in the delays. This is our absolute biggest sale of the year. It's a time where we mark 80% of our shop down HALF OFF. I've mentioned a couple times on facebook about shipping and turnarounds during our sales, but for the purpose of hopefully making everybody aware, I'm going to mention it here as well.

All of our items are made to order, which means that we don't make them until you order them. We do keep some pre-prepped materials in our studio, but that's not always the case. The fact that we offer most of our shop at HALF OFF with made to order items, is a huge deal. Hundreds of orders come through during this sale. I try to only put in the shop, what I know I have available, but situations do arise, where we run out of materials, fabric, etc. When this happens, I have to place orders with my suppliers. Depending on the location of where my suppliers are (some are overseas), delays can happen. This being the case, this sale. We were able to get a large majority of orders out in a timely manner, but there were still quite a few that were on backorder and it put us behind about a week, give or take a few days. I try my very best to communicate with all customers, via etsy convo or email, but there are times when a couple slip through the cracks. I'm not perfect, I'm sorry : /. With each purchase, a note is included in the invoice, which states our shipping policies. Unfortunately, a lot of customers don't read this and email us in a tizzy because their orders have not arrived yet. It's very important that if you do purchase from us on etsy that you do read the invoice. Also, our projected shipping timelines are approximates.

With, all this being said, I'm planning on revamping our Christmas in July SALE, next year and even the holiday sales that will take place later this year. I'm not too sure what the changes will be, but there's a possibility they will only be extended to those on our mailing list. I feel like some customers don't understand the policies regarding our sales, which then prompts concerns, complaints and negative feedback, resulting in delays, which could easily be cleared up, if policies are read and understood. I love offering sales, but due to the misunderstanding of some, I'm not sure if I want to open my business up to negativity. Hopefully, this makes sense and doesn't come across as rude. I'm only being honest.

Hopefully, I've clarified the policies and info regarding our sales and we are working on making them run a little smoother in the future : )

Dainty Button Party and Sweets

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope yours wasn't too rough. It's chilly, rainy and foggy, here in San Francisco. Hasn't made for the most productive day, that's for sure. Well, I'm really excited to just jump in and introduce something really fun. But, first I need to rewind a little and explain the reason for this news, considering it might be in a left field, just a little.

A couple facts about me.

1. I love to decorate.

2. I love to organize and host parties.

3. I absolutely love to bake.

These random facts lead me to last week. My mom and I hosted my sister a baby shower for my nephew, who will be making his arrival this month. So excited! A year and a half ago, I catered for my sister's shower, for my niece, Zoe. It went over very well and kinda landed me a couple holiday catering party gigs, so to speak. Well, my mom and sister asked me to cater again, for my nephew's shower. It was a wonderful break from my daily grind in the headband factory and I remember just how much I absolutely love to bake. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to baking and catering of any kind. I'm huge on presentation and have my little secrets to different recipes. So, I thoroughly enjoyed catering for my nephew's shower. It was a nautical theme and here's a sneak peek...

Lots of fun, with this! Well, after the shower, I had many guests ask me if I catered. Ummm, yes and no. I woke up Friday morning, with a couple emails from random strangers who happened to be referred by guests at the shower, asking about catering and if I would be selling a special treat I had at the party. Cake pops. Yep, the very trendy and yummy treats that Starbucks has made famous. I had a few reservations about this but my friends and family strongly encouraged me over the weekend and I experimented a little bit. I had thought about doing it for those that specifically requested it, but hey, why not add it to my etsy shop? So, I've thought about this a lot over the weekend and have come up with something that I think will work with my little business and not appear to be in left field. If you've followed my business you know that it started off as ladies hair accessories, expanding to little girls, than expanding to a line for men and boys and our recent expansion, our wedding collection. All of these expansions have been a huge success. I've learned to really think ventures through and not just jump on something, just because it sounds fun. So, with a lot of brainstorming, thinking and praying. Yes, I take everything that I do, to the Lord in prayer. I've made the decision to add on a fun little collection.

Build a Headband

Happy Tuesday, everyone! This is our first week of our little project, we brainstormed. Build a Headband! This is a fun little project that will be available every Tuesday, as long as it keeps everyone's interest. I'm hoping it does : )

I get a lot of custom order requests and I thought, "why not make this a fun little project?". So, here you go. The opportunity to build your own headband. This week's headband is going to be rather simple, but fun. I thought we'd start off with something a little more low key, to see how everybody likes this project. Ready?

So, if you're curious as to how this works, I'll fill you in.

Build a Headband and Trunk Shows

Is everybody ready for your Fourth of July weekend? What's everyone's plans? I'm excited about mine! Nice 70 degree weather all weekend, lots of sleeping, eating and good times! And of course, FIREWORKS! Do you watch fireworks and do your own?

Did anybody get a chance to participate in our Customer Appreciation SALE? It's been a wonderful 3 days of savings! Just a little FYI...we are clearancing out our etsy shop throughout July. I will be posting via Facebook, what items will be unlisted each week, to allow you to snag them before they're gone. This will take place throughout July and whatever we have left at the end of July, will be featured in our Christmas in July SALE. Over 80% of our shop will be gone by the end of July. Beginning the end of July, we will slowly start introducing our Back to School/Fall Line, which I'm super excited about. I've been picking up wonderful prints and ideas that I think you and your friends and family will love! Be sure and check it out!

I've been brainstorming and cooking up a couple projects for my lil' business that I think you will like. We have our Giveaway Friday each week and I'd like to slowly work in an extra little fun. Here's my idea:

Build a Headband

Here's your chance to make your own headband! I'm asked for customized orders all the time and I do my very best to meet each customers needs, but I thought it would be a lot of fun to let you have the experience of picking and choosing what you'd like on your headband. Here's how this project will work:

Each Tuesday, I will post an official Build a Headband blog post. This post will have your options to choose from. There will be several options and the great thing. One price! There will be certain options to choose from, but definitely worth your money! If you like the weekly Build a Headband options, simply comment with your email address and an order form will be sent by the day's end. Simply fill the order form out, email it back to us and we'll set a listing up for you in our etsy shop, or email an invoice your way. It's that easy! Each week will be different. It might be a traditional headband, Jersey Band or an "Its a Wrap". We might throw in an option for shoe clips, even, although that wouldn't necessarily be considered a headband, but why not?!

Our first Build a Headband post will go up Tuesday, July 5th! Be sure and check it out!

The second little project is something I've thought about for quite some time. I have had several different ladies email me, asking what they needed to do to have a Dainty Button Trunk Show in their area. Well, a lot easier said than done. One, I need a representative that can host a Trunk Show. Two, I need an area that Dainty Button will be well received. My goal is to feature one Trunk Show a month in a different state or area. Are you interested in hosting a Trunk Show? The race is on! We're looking for the perfect individual that would be the "hostess with the mostess". Summertime and Summer Sales

It's summertime, Friday and I'm ready to relax! How about you? Got any special summertime plans? Vacations? I love hearing about people's summer plans. Not that it matters, but I just returned from a little vacation, myself. I like to think of it as a sort of vacation, but in all reality, it wasn't much of one. It was work. Well, the first part, at least. My grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary over Father's Day weekend, and decided to renew their wedding vows. In Missouri. So, we all made the trip to Southeast Missouri (Cape Girardeau) to witness this special occasion. This was a big trip for everybody, considering my grandparents have 6 children, my dad being the oldest, their spouses, 16 grandchildren and 1.5 great grandchildren. Throw in their own siblings, cousins, friends, etc. and you have the makings of one big celebration. It was a lot of fun, but I'll be honest. I was happy to see 60 degree weather and a little bit of fog when I came home on Wednesday. Here's a few pictures from the celebration

Our entire family is from Missouri, so we visit occasionally. Every trip, we make it a point to swing by Lambert's. Have you ever eaten at a Lambert's? Oh my! If not, you're missing out! Forget about all diets when you go! It's good ol' southern cooking and home of the thrown rolls. They throw rolls at you. These huge, bready, buttery, soft, HOT rolls! They're to die for!! And so, this trip we made TWO stops! Ha!

We headed back to Memphis for a couple days and we were able to visit a place we've all been wanting to, for a long time. Graceland! I love Elvis, as does my entire family, so this was a special treat. Here's a few pictures from our fun visit.

Christmas in July SALE...

This sale is one of our larger sales. This is a time when we're clearing out all of our summer inventory and preparing for Back to School and Fall. This sale is open to everybody and a code will be posted in our shop that you can use. This sale will take place July 29th to 31st. A few rules that apply to our sales:

1. Custom orders are not available. The choice of a wide/skinny band is available, as well as white/black. These are the only exceptions.

2. Sale items are not shipped out until 7-10 business days after purchased.

3. All sales are FINAL.

4. If you don't see an item in our shop, that means it's not available.

I don't know about you, but I have the BEST dad! This blog post is devoted to our dad's! I feel bad for dad's, in a way, because Father's Day kinda gets a little downplayed from Mother's Day. Wouldn't you agree? Church programs are a little more low key, too. My dad is the hardest person in the world, to buy for. Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and Father's Day. You ask him, "dad, what do you want for Father's Day?", "Oh, I don't know". Ok, then! That helps me out a lot! I usually give him a gift card to Apple. The Sad Shoe Story

Hello, everyone! Hope you are doing great and enjoyed your holiday weekend! I would've never guessed it was the first holiday of the summer, considering our weather this week. I feel like I've stepped back into January. Weird!

Well, this post is a little late in the making. I have struggled with this decision for about a month, now. It's been a tough decision to make, but when I look at the big picture, it's the right one. Those are usually the hardest, huh? This post is about shoes. About a year ago, I ventured into new territory, after my shoe clips became a big hit with people and decided to do the whole shebang. Why not the entire shoe? I have great success with this and horrible nightmares with it. Believe it or not, this is probably the most stressful part of my business. I, honestly don't know how shoe salespeople do it.

The good points would be, they're pretty, they're popular, shoes are a girls best friend, therefore will always be in style and they're shoes! The bad points are, shoe sizes can be a pain in the rump. If they don't fit, a customer isn't happy. Thankfully, I've offered an exchange policy, which has helped. They are, at times, delayed in shipments. Except for during the Christmas season and one design last Spring, each shoe is made to order, which means that even the shoe, is not carried in my shop. They're custom ordered. This has become a problem and a huge headache for myself, as well as shipping team. I only did the shoes for periods of time, last year and I started getting emails, convo's through etsy and on FB that everybody wanted more shoes. This seemed like a grand idea, especially right after a "sold out" holiday shoe design and another extremely popular design last summer. Well, I granted that wish, although where did all the "we want more shoes" people go? Ha! I've analyzed this from different points of view. My solution is this:

As of Saturday, June 4th, my entire shoe collection, except for one design, possibly two (excluding The Wedding Shoe) will be discontinued. My Shoe Collection will only carry 1 or 2 designs at a time, and possibly not even throughout the entire year. This will be a LIMITED TIME ONLY design, depending on the season and holiday. This will give customers an opportunity to purchase, keep my team and I sane and all the "we want more shoes" people, missed out, I guess : (

Our Shoe Candy Collection will still be available. A lot of the designs that you see on our shoes, are available as shoe clips. Just not the shoe.

Collection Launch

Well, after much procrastination, I have finally decided to test the waters into two areas that I'm learning quite a bit about. Weddings and swimwear. What a combo, right? Over the past year and a half, I've tested the waters with different ideas. Some have been wonderful, others have been a dead end road. The bottom line is, you can't do everything. I'd love to say I'm Martha Stewart, but well, I was taught lying is a sin.

I, honestly don't know where this road will take me. I hope far, but we shall see. Over a year ago, I started brainstorming and creating ideas for weddings. I've never been married, don't have plans on getting married any time soon, but I am a girl and let's be honest, girls, regardless what age you are, daydream. I started creating this collection with what I like in mind. If I were to get engaged tomorrow and set down to plan a wedding, I would give you at least 5 different themes, ideas and color schemes. So, when I started working on this collection, over a year ago, I brought different ideas to the table. You'll find in this collection, a lot of vintage, which I'm a huge fan of. Very feminine, soft, traditional and romantic pieces. Of course, there's those brides that don't like traditional and I'm slowly working those ideas into the collection. This is testing the waters, after 60% of my time, the last few months, has been working with wedding parties. Something I didn't plan, but it just happened. I have to admit, I love it!

Saturday, a wonderful model (Emily Wilder) devoted her afternoon to lending a hand in modeling a few bridal pieces. It was fun and...interesting. It turned out to be a beautiful day, the beach was crowded and she was such a trooper changing into our vintage Vera Wang gown, on loan from my wonderful, dear friend, Deana of So What Industries, behind a linen sheet. Oh boy! My brother, Jon-Marc, did my photography and did such a fabulous job! I'm so proud of him!

What Have I Got Myself, Into?

Well, once again, I'm venturing into a new adventure. Oh, boy! If you've been following us on facebook, you'll know we are launching two brand new lines, next week. A Swimwear and Wedding Collection. I'm not sure what possesses me to get myself into these projects, but something does. The Wedding Collection, Happily Ever After is a collection that I've been brainstorming, working on and creating over a year now. In Dainty Button's early stages, I wanted to launch a wedding collection, but I was so overwhelmed, it was not a good idea. Even, I was smart enough to realize that. I've worked on it, put it off, procrastinated, until I cannot any longer. It's now or never. So, here we go...

I can't say the same for the Swimwear Collection, though. This little adventure was brainstormed as my good friend, Deana, and I were driving home from a business trip, a few weeks ago. Fast forward to now. We have a swimwear collection. Ha! A very adorable swimwear collection, might I add. To be honest, I have no idea where this little adventure is going to take me, but we're about to find out. I've had several comments on our fan page, emails, etc. asking what to expect. Well...

Our Swimwear Collection will start off, somewhat small, to test the waters. But, I must share with you guys, a little sneak peek...

I'm SUPER excited about launching this. We have our photo shoot this Saturday, here in San Francisco, at one of our beaches. It's going to be a nice, cool 60 degrees. Please, keep our models in your thoughts and prayers. Ha! No, seriously.

A little details on this new collection.

The swimsuits will go on sale PRE-ORDER on Tuesday, May 24th, in my etsy shop, http://www.etsy.com/shop/DaintyButton?ref=si_shop. There will be a 3-4 week turn around on these sales. If you purchase a swimsuit piece during May 24th - 31st, you'll receive a special discount, before the collection goes to regular retail, on June 1st. A couple of the designs will be limited. The rest of our Swimwear Collection will be on a regular turn around. There will be a special Pre-Launch Preview, Monday, May 23rd, via our special email blast. We can't forget our second line...

This particular collection, I have been working on for a long time. I've added, taken away, tweeked and been way too OCD about it. It's our Happily Ever After Collection. I can't tell you how many emails and inquiries I get about weddings. In the past few months, I have done such a large amount of work for weddings, brides, bridal parties, etc. So, with that in mind, I'm launching this collection.

Of course, I'm excited about this, as well. This will start off as a rather small collection. Not too small, but baby steps : )

There will be something for the entire wedding party, special wedding packages and discounts for your special day. As well, as our Swimwear Collection, a sneak preview will be sent out, via email blast, on Monday, May 23rd, with some fun "behind the scenes" photos of our photo shoot.

I've received many emails, asking if "such and such" headband or "such and such" bow tie will be on sale. Well, I'm going to try and help everybody out and give you an idea of what's going to be on sale, what's not and how big of a sale to expect. I can't list every item, considering we have over 100 items in our shop and if that was the case, you'd still be reading next week. Here we go...

Headbands (Traditional/Jersey Band)

All headbands will be on sale. Some (the older items) will be on sale at 50% off, the new items will be discounted between 10-20% off and some will practically be given away in our "Bargain Bin" : )

Details, regarding our etsy shop:

Our etsy shop will be closing, Saturday morning, May 7th at 10 AM (PST) and re-open on Monday, May 9th at 7 AM (PST), when the Spring Sale begins. The shop is scheduled to close at 8 PM (PST). I did mention in our previous post that if our sale became insane, we would close the shop. This is not likely going to happen, but you can check the status on our facebook fan page throughout the day, as we'll post prior to this being the case.

Our etsy shop will be closed at 8 PM (PST), Monday, May 9th until Thursday morning, May 12th at 10 AM (PST). This is to allow us to get "back to normal", once the sale has ended and also prepare our shop for brand new Summer designs. PLEASE NOTE, a lot of our pieces that are currently in the shop, will not be available after our Spring Sale. The new items and popular pieces, of course will, but a majority of them will not. Again, I wouldn't hesitate on this sale.

The Spring Sale

How is everyone? Wow, it's been awhile since I've had a chance to blog. Maybe, you're happy about this. Haha! Well, I've been promising this post on my fb fan page for about 4 days now, and I'm just now getting around to it. The last two weeks of my life have been absolutely insane. A lot of good was accomplished but, still busy nonetheless. Our church does a HUGE Easter event every year that I brainstormed 5 years ago with our Kids Ministry team. Since, then it's become a huge community event and very successful. I'm so honored that I can help lead such an amazing outreach event. We call this event Easter in the Park. We provide egg hunts, huge inflatables, face painting, giveaways to needy families, etc. It's such a great time and a wonderful way of giving back to the community. And fun too! We had over 1,000 attend this year! Our biggest year, ever! Here's a few shots of this event.

And this is how I spent my Easter weekend. And of course, a beautiful Easter service at my home church, Abounding Grace at San Francisco, with my family. I hope yours was wonderful!

This week, I took a lil' mini vacay and enjoyed out of state company. Such a fabulous week, but lots of catching up to do!

So, the purpose of the blog is about the upcoming sale, so I will quit babbling and get down to business.

Spring Sale

I am asked, often, when I'll be having a sale or if I have sales. Yes, I do have sales. Although, after a year plus, in owning my own business and learning the art (still learning) of running a business, sales unfortunately, do not come as often as they used to. I love sales, myself and I do my best to price my merchandise as reasonably as possible. I love bargains, just as much as the next person. I do my best to offer great deals, but in the meantime, I also have to eat. Ha! I offer sales during the holidays, special discounts throughout the year and I have two large sales a year, outside of the Christmas season. The Spring Sale and Christmas in July SALES. These are two opportunities to purchase Dainty Button at great prices. Normally, I offer 50% off, on most but not all, my merchandise. If you happen to see a sale throughout the year with discounts, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! I can't offer sales all the time, so when I do, it's something to definitely jump on! : )

The truth about previous sales:

Last year, I threw our Christmas in July SALE and it was wonderful. For the customers. LOL! No, it was great for us too, but the truth is, I only had one individual helping me and we ran over a month late on orders, resulting in some very upset customers. A couple things that a lot of individuals do not know when purchasing handmade, original items.

They are HANDMADE, FOR YOU.

This means, that items are not normally made until you order them. They are original, one of a kind, pieces. I'm not Nordstrom, Macy's, Target, your local Claire's, etc., where it's just sitting on a shelf. It takes a lot of time and detail to make my pieces. I do happen to have some pieces in stock, but a lot of times, it's made to order. Therefore, during last year's sale, with over 100 orders, some averaging 10-15 pieces, per order, it almost killed me. Seriously. This is one reason why I don't have large sales, all the time. Without sounding rude, when items are made to order, sales, don't really benefit a business. So, here are a few changes I'm making to this year's first big sale and hopefully, it will benefit everyone.

1. Items will not be shipped out until 7-10 business days AFTER purchased.

2. My shop will close for the day, once orders become excessive.

Yes, we are capable, but we are also human. LOL!

3. Not all items will be on sale.

80% of my items will be discounted, some at 50% off, but not all. There are some items in my shop that, unfortunately, I cannot offer that large of a discount. This is the first time I've done this, but on Tuesday, May 3rd, I will release the list of inventory that will be on sale. If there is an item that IS NOT on the inventory list, that means that it will not be on sale.

So, when is the sale?

Monday, May 9th
7 AM to 8 PM (PST)

A couple, important things to keep in mind:

1. There will only be a certain amount of inventory in some pieces. If you don't see it in the shop, it's not available, any longer.

2. My shop will be closed, Saturday, May 7th at 10 AM (PST) until Monday, May 8th when the sale begins, at 7 AM (PST).

3. Discounts will already be taken, hence the reason for the above mention of my shop being closed, as we prepare for the sale.

4. THERE ARE NO EXCHANGES OR REFUNDS ON SALE ITEMS.

5. If you place items in your shopping cart, confirm order, but do not follow through with payment, it will result in negative feedback on etsy and future purchases will be prohibited. The reason for this is, it costs a fee every time we list or relist an item, on etsy. If you confirm an order but do not follow through with payment, that results in fees for us. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS AND COURTEOUS WHEN PLACING AN ORDER.

I hope none of the above details and rules come across as harsh or rude. I'm taking pre-cautionary measures, so you, as a customer, and my team and I will benefit from this wonderful event.

I mentioned on Monday, via facebook, that I was considering having a sale, in honor of finding out I'd be an auntie to a nephew, on Monday. With the craziness of yesterday's wonderful day, with our Japan Benefit Day, I decided to wait until today, to give details and all that jazz.

How many of you are aunties? Or uncles? My little sister (yes, she got married before me. GASP!) and brother-in-law had their first baby last year. Yes, she's pregnant again. Ha! They didn't plan this second one, but it's been a wonderful surprise to the entire family. I'm presently auntie to this adorable little angel face.

Well, Zoe Belle will be getting a little brother this summer. I will now have one of each. This should be fun! I don't think I could've introduced a little boys/men's line at a better time.

Japan Benefit Day

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you had a fabulous weekend! Mine was busy, but enjoyable, nonetheless. I hope your Monday is treating you well. For those that do not know me personally, I'm going to be an auntie again. My little sister is pregnant with her second baby and will find out this morning if it's a boy or girl, which I'm impatiently awaiting to hear! I might be working on my first baby, at the time my sister and brother-in-law are welcoming their 10th. Ha! Well, let me get to the purpose of this blog : )

This is a small, but thoughtful way of my business reaching out to a nation in need. I wish I could just send thousands of dollars, but that's not the case. Inventory

There is one thing I absolutely hate in running a business. And that's inventory. I'd rather have a root canal. Ok, actually I wouldn't. But, it's safe to say, I really hate it. And it's that time. I keep a pretty good inventory on a consistent basis but there is that inventory where you must go in and count every single, little thing. Even down to thread and glue sticks. Ugh! Anybody want to come help? : )

This post is not really all about inventory, although it sorta is? There's a point to this, though. A method to my madness, so to speak. My accountant visited my shop and was really surprised and overwhelmed at my inventory. Basically, I have way too much. And I hate to say this, but she's right. I have way too much inventory. About 60% is sold on a consistent basis and well, the rest isn't. I love to design, create and introduce new pieces but I also, must have a balance and stay consistent. So, that being said. It's "sayonara" time. To my dismay, I must part with some inventory. This might make me sound like a "french fry short of a happy meal", but I grow attached to my accessory pieces. Everybody always talks about my names for each piece and where I find them. I make up a lot of them. Some are picked from a favorite song, movie, broadway, etc. And once they're named, the attachment begins. I know, a bit weird. So, parting with some of these makes me feel a lil' bum'ish, but it is what it is.

I decided to share the pieces that will be discontinued with you, for the sake of, if you've been eyeing one of them, you'll have a chance to snag one before they're gone. Below are the items that will no longer be available after this weekend.

Give a Hand to Those in Need

How many besides me are just torn up over the Japan crisis? It's so sad! I've watched so many clips of coverage on the natural disaster and seen the devastating pictures, that it truly makes my heart hurt. I cannot imagine what it's like going through such a horrific ordeal. I pray my family and I are never faced with that crisis. Last week, I saw other businesses lending a hand and making donations and I immediately started thinking of ways that my lil' business could help. Obviously, I cannot give thousands or millions, but I can do whatever is within my reach and help. I threw some ideas around with friends and family over the weekend. I also posted something on our fan page last night and received some great suggestions from some of our fans. I personally, know of some missionaries in Japan, as well as friends that have family there. I want to help in any way that I can. Imagine you, being struck with this disaster, homeless, abandoned and your family torn apart. It's awful!

Late last night, I spoke with a really close friend, that had a really great suggestion, along the lines that some of you suggested on facebook. I'm adding a little twist to this and want to rally as many people as I can to participate in this endeavor. On March 29th, from 10 AM to 8 PM (PST), I will be selling one selection from the "It's a Wrap" Collection for $7, plus shipping. All proceeds will go towards the Red Cross. My assistants and myself are devoting our time, with no profit, whatsoever out of this, in order to help a nation, in need. Please keep in mind, this is less than half of retail and you will never get this price, even during our half off sales and during the holidays. Most importantly, it's going for a good cause.

And one last lil' tidbit to leave you with...

How many of you have referred a friend or family member to Dainty Button and they've purchased something? I'm sure a lot of you have. I, personally know of some of our customers that have been loyal customers since we began and have referred TONS of other customers and that means so much to us. I try my best to show my gratitude with words, but I want to REALLY show my appreciation. And so, I was talking to my close friend last night, regarding this. They suggested a rewards type program for anybody that refers someone. Well, I had already been playing with the idea of rewarding those that I know have referred somebody, but why not make it fun for everybody? And give everybody the chance to refer someone. So, here's what we came up with.

Twice a year, I have a HUGE sale. The kind of sale where EVERYTHING in my shop is half off. These sales have been a very big success, but in all honesty, I cannot do them all the time, much to everybody asking. I just can't, I'm sorry. But what I can do, is offer them twice a year and let you have a chance to stock up on Dainty Button for a great price. Incredible price, actually. Our first big sale of the year is next month, as we close out our Spring inventory and bring in our Summer inventory. I have not decided upon a date yet, but it will probably be the end of April. Here's some info regarding the sale:

1. ONLY what is in inventory will be available in the sale. Meaning, if it's a back ordered item, limited or not in stock, it WILL NOT be part of the sale. So, if you've got your eye on a particular item, that does not necessarily mean it will be part of the sale. I will not know what will be in the sale until the week prior, at which I will give a sneak peek.

2. All items will have a 7 -10 business day turnaround after purchase, due to the high volume of orders that our sales bring in.

Here's the catch to our big SPRING SALE. You must be invited. There will be a coupon code that will access your discount at checkout. This code is only available in your "invite". So, how do you receive an invite?

1. If you have referred someone in the past year and they have purchased something from us, you automatically receive an invite. This only applies to those that we have record of. If you've referred someone and they bought something, but we don't know that you referred them, it DOES NOT apply. How can we find out? If that individual would like to email us at daintybutton@yahoo.com and give us your name and our records indicate a purchase from them, you will get rewards for it, as well as them.

2. If you refer someone between now and the time the "invite" goes out, they purchase something in our etsy shop and put your name at checkout, you and them both receive an "invite".

Does any of this make sense? Ha!

Bottom line. You must be "invited" to the big SPRING SALE, by referring someone, them buying and mentioning your name.

Well, our Week of Giveaways has ended. On a great note, I might add : )

This past week has really been fun and very successful! I love doing giveaways and this round of them was no exception. I really want to thank EVERYBODY that participated and shared our Dainty Button and black & white by Dainty Button fan pages, as well as became a follower on twitter and our blog. In the short span of a week, we've reached almost 1,000 fans on facebook. We were under 500 when the giveaways kicked off. That's awesome! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I will be doing one giveaway a week for the unforeseen future, on Thursday's, which will last until Saturday. I will post more details on this later in the week.
